Roblox Glossary of Terms

  • Adopt Me: A popular role-playing game on Roblox where players can adopt and take care of virtual pets.
  • Avatar – The character representing you in an experience. Avatars can be customized in the Avatar Shop with items that are free or cost Robux.
  • Bacon – Generally a dera
  • Builderman – The username of Roblox founder and CEO Dave Baszucki. He’s viewed as a popular character.
  • Brick: A basic building block used in Roblox games.
  • Chat: A communication feature that allows players to send messages to each other in real time.
  • DevEx: Developer Exchange – a program that allows developers to exchange their Robux for real money.
  • Experience – A term for the games, simulations, and worlds found in Roblox.
  • Friends: You can look up player profiles by typing their usernames into the search bar. You can add them to your โ€œfriends list.โ€ Having someone in your friend list makes it easier to find their profile later, and allows you to admit them into โ€œfriends-onlyโ€ servers.
  • Frontpage: The main page of Roblox where popular games are featured and can be accessed.
  • Gamepass: A purchasable feature that provides access to special items, abilities, or areas within a game.
  • Group – Groups are communities on Roblox, hosted on the Roblox website. Groups have simple social features, such as member lists and a wall to post announcements or messages.
  • GUI: Graphical User Interface – the visual elements that appear on the screen and allow players to interact with the game.
  • Hat: An item that can be worn on a player’s avatar’s head.
  • Hitbox: The area around an object in the game where it can be interacted with or affected by other objects or characters.
  • Instance: A unique copy of an object in the game, with its own properties and settings.
  • Inventory: A list of all the items and accessories that a player’s avatar currently possesses.
  • Moderation – All content in a Roblox experience goes through a moderation process to ensure that it is appropriate according to Trust and Safety standards.
  • Microtransaction: A small purchase made within a game, such as buying virtual currency or a special item.
  • Newb, Newbie, or Noob – A new player. Often can be used in a derogatory way to insult people they think are new to a game.
  • Obby: An abbreviation for “obstacle course,” a type of game where players navigate through a series of obstacles and challenges.
  • Oof – The classic Roblox death sound. Students may just say it occasionally for fun.
  • Party: A group of players who can chat and play together in a private game session.
  • Place: The game environment where players can interact and play.
  • Private Server – Some Roblox experiences offer people the ability to create private servers which only they and their invited friends can visit.
  • Render: The process of generating and displaying graphics and animations on the screen.
  • Roblox Client – The software used to visit Roblox experiences.
  • Roblox Studio – The software used to create experiences.
  • Robux – The in-game currency system in Roblox. Robux costs real money and can be purchased on Roblox.com or using gift cards. Robux is often used to customize in-game avatars or get bonuses in certain experiences.
  • Scams, Hacking, and Hoaxes – While Roblox does all it can to ensure player safety, there are some bad actors.
  • Script: A programming code that controls the behavior of objects and characters in the game.
  • Scripting: The process of writing code to create interactive elements and behavior within a game.
  • Server: The computer or network that hosts a game, and allows players to connect and play together.
  • Simulator – Simulator games allow players to perform simple, repetitive actions in order to make progress. The goal often involves clicking an item in the world until it reaches its maximum level, then turning that object (and all of its progress), in exchange for an upgraded version with a higher maximum potential. Additionally, there’s often a roleplaying aspect, such as managing a factory, restaurant, or even operating a vehicle.
  • Spawn: The initial location where a player’s avatar appears when entering a game.
  • Thumbnail: The image that appears on the game’s page and represents the game to potential players.
  • Trade: A feature that allows players to exchange items or virtual currency with each other.
  • Tools and Inventory – Tools refer to objects players can “wear” or equip. These vary between games but can be an axe to chop down wood, or a potion to recover a player’s health. Tools are included in a player’s Inventory.
  • Tycoon – In the Tycoon genre, players collect from “droppers” that produce currency over time, in order to pay to construct parts of buildings (walls, furniture, etc). As each part is constructed, new parts and droppers unlock for purchase. This cycle of collecting, building, and waiting to collect continues until there are no more additions left to build.
  • UI: User Interface – the overall design and layout of the game’s interface.
  • Update: A new release or version of a game, which may include bug fixes, new features, or improvements.
